Throughout the UK, being overweight is becoming an increasingly common problem affecting a very large number of people. Wales is particularly affected with the latest estimates suggesting that over 50% of adults and 35% of children in this country are measured as being overweight or obese. Body Mass Index (BMI) is the measure that most health professionals use to determine whether or not a person is overweight. This measure is used all over the world to describe people's bodyweight according to their size. Using this measure a person whose BMI is over 25 is defined as overweight, over 30 as obese, whilst a BMI over 35 is classified as morbidly obese. Your own BMI can be easily calculated using the guide on the right side of this page.
