Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass (LRYGB)Laparoscopic gastric bypass is a keyhole operation that involves dividing the top part of the stomach and reconnecting it to a part of the small intestine much further down the gut. In effect the majority of the stomach and a variable length of the small bowel are “bypassed”. The procedure works in two ways: firstly by reducing the amount of food a person can eat due to a smaller stomach “pouch” and secondly by a hormonal effect. Patients report a reduction in their appetite as a result. This procedure is particularly effective in patients with type II diabetes resulting in as many as 85% of diabetic patients returning to normal blood sugar levels without the need for medication. It will also result in as much as 75% excess weight loss, the vast majority of the weight being lost in the first six months after surgery.
