The key to losing weight is control of your energy balance. Energy balance is the relationship between how much food a person absorbs (intake) and how much energy the body uses up (output). When the energy used up in physical activity is less than the energy taken in by eating, this excess energy is kept in reserve and is stored as fat. Reducing food intake or increasing physical activity uses up this stored energy, reduces the amount of excess fat and ultimately leads to weight loss. Bariatric (weight loss) surgery can reduce excess weight by: 1. Reducing food intake = restrictive operations 2. Reducing food intake and causing less of this food to be absorbed         = restrictive and malabsorptive operations 3. Reducing food intake slightly but causing less food absorption         = malabsorptive operations.
