Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a keyhole operation that involves removing 80% of the stomach creating a tube. As a result the patient is not able to consume as much food as before. By removing the upper part of the stomach (which contains cells responsible for creating feelings of hunger) the patient will feel less hungry. The operation involves a one to two-night hospital stay. Patients are started on a liquid diet for two weeks, followed by two weeks of a pureed diet and a further two weeks of a soft diet before a return to a normal diet.   The current results from our unit show an average of 60% excess weight loss at one year after surgery.
