Obesity is much more than cosmetic issue. It is a serious risk to health and well- being. Being obese carries a much greater risk of developing a wide range of illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, certain types of cancer, osteoarthritis of the spine, knees and hips, infertility, and obstructive sleep apnoea. The risk of dying prematurely is directly related to a person's BMI as well as the duration of time that a person has been overweight. Obesity is also associated with a lower quality of life. Many overweight people become depressed and are unable to live life to the fullest because of the difficulties fitting in to society. Simple activities such as being able to hold down a job and earn money, caring for other family members, or even finding clothes that fit and look good are burdens that many find overwhelming.
